FAQs
-
Jiu Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a dynamic martial art and sport that focuses on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. Very similar to wrestling or judo. Unlike many other martial arts that emphasize striking, BJJ teaches practitioners how to control and neutralize opponents using leverage, technique, and position. This makes it an excellent choice for self-defense, bully prevention, and coordination development as it allows a smaller person to defend against a larger, stronger opponent.
While our summer camp does involve jiu jitsu, it is not exclusively a “Jiu Jitsu” camp. We use jiu jitsu and other physical activities as an entry point to get children moving in their bodies in a fun and healthy way that builds confidence.
Jiu jitsu is a particularly powerful tool for helping kids learn emotional resilience as it puts them in physically uncomfortable but safe positions that require them to use their breath and conscious movements to advance the position. This type of training gives children a framework and tactics to work through discomfort- something that will serve them in other areas of their lives. It is also particularly useful for neuro-divergent children who may have trouble focusing or participating in “sit-still-and-focus” activities.

It's a good idea to bring flip flops or sandals. No shoes are permitted on the mats and you can't go barefoot off the mats. Flip-flops or crocs make for a seamless transition.
If your child has their own gi, bring it! If you don’t have a gi… worry not, just wear clothes you can move and play in without any metal zippers or clasps.
And of course, bring a water bottle.
Please make sure to bring a packed lunch. HLPFC will provide a light snack each day of camp.
-
Not at all. There will be some large group activities with all the children and other activities tailored for different age and experience levels. Whether experienced in jiu jitsu or this will be their first time on the mat, children will have plenty to learn and be in good company with other children at their level.
-
